bringing in the light…
Tonight (or technically speaking, early early tomorrow morning) is the winter solstice… the longest and darkest night of the year here in the Northern Hemisphere, after which the sun will shine every so slightly longer each day, until eventually we’re once again smitten with lazy summer afternoons. It’s easy to pretend that snow is imminent just by looking outside at the dark and cloudy sky…. although in reality, if you were to open up the door where I am, you’d be greeted with a balmy 57 degrees.
And yet, despite the odd weather, one cycle ends…. and another one begins.
Today, although I’ve been a bit sick and fevery, all snuggled up in fuzzy fleece pjs and sipping on carrot ginger soup, I’ve been giving some thought to two simple questions…
~ What are you ready to release into the shadows?
~ What are you ready to invite into the light?
Tonight I light a candle and let go of the tendency to be critical of myself, even when I’m trying to treat myself with honor and care. I let go of the notion that this holiday, it’s my job alone to make sure everyone is happy. I let go of trying to be the perfect gluten-sugar-free, 10K running goddess. I let go of wanting extraneous clutter that really doesn’t mean much to me. I let go of trying so hard and being in a hurry.
And as I light this candle, I shine a light on my capacity to love and heal the broken parts of me that really aren’t broken. I shine a light on my willingness to love without limits and to trust in my own sovereignty. I shine a light on the spunky adventuresome me that is ready to try new things and stretch beyond the familiar and safe. I shine a light on my ability to listen to my body and to my spirit, and truly honor what they need from one moment to the next.
And you?
A happy Solstice to everyone!
